You + Me = Three

On Monday February 7, 2011, Sean and I found out we were having a baby. I imagined this moment in our lives to be VERY different from how it actually went-down. I assumed we'd have to try for a few months, take multiple pregnancy tests, until the lucky month when we could celebrate a positive test! Little did I know, we'd be surprised/shocked/elated to find out we got pregnant within days (of "not trying"), not months of trying. Here's the story of how we found out we were going to be parents:

On my drive home, I was talking to my friend Jess on the phone. She recently discovered that she was having a baby, so was describing some of her early symptoms to me. With each new piece of information she shared, I grew more suspicious. As I recalled the last week or so (upset stomach, feeling extra tired, and still waiting for my period) the puzzle pieces fell in place. Jess advised I go get a pregnancy test "just to rule it out" so I could stop wondering and worrying. I called Sean and told him I was going to Walgreens to buy a pregnancy test (a first for me) and he said, "I was wondering when you were going to do that!".

Once home, I took the test immediately. The instructions said it should take 3 minutes for the results to show up. Within SECONDS, a plus sign appeared. I, of course, assume that because it showed so quickly that  there must be some sort of error. I showed Sean the test, baffled, and sure that it was wrong. He agreed and said, "let's eat dinner, you should drink some more water, and we'll take another test in like half an hour". Great idea, I thought. So, we made and ate dinner (as if the biggest event in our lives had not just happened).

About an hour later, I took another test. Again, within seconds (seriously before I could even put the test on the counter), that damn plus sign popped up again! I show it to Sean, practically laughing, like...."seriously, is this really happening?" Being the tech-geek he is, Sean decides that we should get a digital read-out test (because that MUST be more accurate, right?) instead of these silly plus and minus sign tests. So, Sean goes back to Walgreens and buys a 3-pack of digital pregnancy tests.

It was only after we took the 3rd and final test, and saw the digital screen read "PREGNANT" that we actually let ourselves believe what had always been true. We were really, like really really having a baby. We never believed that it would happen so fast, and feel so incredibly blessed to know that our family of 2 will become a party of three this year.

Here is the first pregnancy test I took. Turns out we didn't need test #2 or #3 after all.
